Preschool This program is offered to children 2-4 years of age. They are introduced to the varieties of music, rhythms, basic movements of the body and awareness of individual responses to music. The primary goals of the program are to allow the child to become more efficient in coordination, motor control, disciplined social activity and mastery of very basic dance movements. These goals are achieved through Tap and Ballet. Kinderdance This is an introductory program for 5-6 year old students in Tap and Ballet. This level picks up where Preschool left off. However, the preschool program is not required. Kinderdance is more structured and requires the student to begin using rhythm counts and basic dance terminology. Ballet Ballet is a way of telling a story, using music and dance instead of words. This is a strongly technical form on dance. It consists of patterns of movement developed over centuries. It expressly requires the dancer to become proficient in turn out, control, mobility, agility, stability and firmness of body. Serious study does not begin until age eight.
Pointe This is offered to students at least 11 years old who have passed the requirements of Ballet in strength and balance after at least three years of ballet class based on a minimum of 1 - 1 1/2 hours weekly.
Pre-Jazz and Jazz An upbeat American form of dance seen in musicals, film and music videos. Hip Hop This is a popular form of dance seen most often iin music videos and in pop star concerts. Body movements and placement of the body are less defined as in ballet, and is a creative and hip way to move to music.
Tap This is the rhythmic isolation of sounds produced by the feet and set to a given piece of music, usually employing style and technique of other dance forms. The sounds are amplified throughout the use of metal taps placed on the heels and toes of the shoes. It started in America in the 19th century with its roots in the Irish jig and English clog of early settlers, mingled with the African tribal dances brought by slaves.
Modern This is a highly creative dance form using expressive movements. It began at the end of the 19th century; a number of people felt classical ballet put too many restrictions on how the body could move and limited the way dancers expressed their feelings. The dances are often about ideas or moods instead of telling a story, as in ballet.
Lyrical This is a contemporary style of dance with interpretation of music.
